Description
The Aiquile meteorite is the first Bolivian meteorite fall. It fell on 20 November 2016. This is one of the most recent falls on record that was recovered and only a few pieces has been available for collectors. The main fragment fell 500m apart from a man who saw the impact on Earth of a 36 kilo stone. That piece is now in the museum of the city. It is classified as an H5 chondrite with weather grade of ‘W0’ as it is a fresh fall recovered shortly after hitting the Earth.
This specimen was picked up shortly after the fall as it hit the red cabin of a truck in town. Hence, the paint still printed on the surface. This piece is special for its big size and the prints of the red truck cabin it hit when falling on Earth. That makes it a hammer stone and belongs to the selected group of meteorites that hit vehicles: Peekskill, Worden, St. Louis, Benld and Neagari. Except Peekskill and this Aiquile piece, all of them are unobtainable. And this is probably the only complete stone of all of them.
