Description
In 2020, meteorite hunters in NWA found 9 stones with a distinctive brown fusion crust totaling 399 g. They were purchased in December 2020 by Miguel Angel Contreras Gomez from a meteorite dealer in Tindouf. The meteorite were subsequently analyzed and classified as a brecciated eucrite. The meteorites have a grey interior that makes a great contrast with the chocolate-coloured fusion crust.
Eucrites are a rare type of meteorite that come from Asteroid Vesta. It is in the asteroid belt, between Mars and Jupiter. It orbits the Sun with a period of 3,6 Earth years and has a diameter of 525 kilometres. A great impact occurred in the South hemisphere of Vesta less than 1 billion years ago, ejecting rocks from the asteroid into space. Eventually some of these rocks fell on Earth.
