Description

Saint Aubin is one of the very few iron meteorites from Europe available to collectors. It was discovered in 1968 in France, near Paris. Years later more masses have been found. The meteorite event is estimated to have occurred 55,000 years ago.

Due to its location in farmland, it received water and many chemicals from agriculture over the years and that is supposed to be the reason why it rusts faster than other iron meteorites. This piece, however, had a special treatment called subcritical fluids stabilization that consists of removing inner chlorines from the meteorite under high pressures. This process is expensive and requires time and specialized technology. However, it’s worth it as it is supposed to be the best method to keep iron meteorites from rusting.

Thiis piece is complete, but if cut, it has a beautiful Widmanstatten pattern inside.

It is an iron meteorite and hence, it comes from the core of asteroids that were destroyed by impacts with other bodies. It is an alloy of iron-nickel mainly although it contains other trace elements like iridium.
