Description
The Hickman meteorite was found in June 2018 in Western Australia, Australia. It was found by a gold prospector in June 2018, 2.5 km SE of Hickman crater. The specimen was sold to a local mineral dealer who brought it to the 2020 Tucson. Other pieces were found since then.
The Hickman crater, on the other hand, was discovered in July 2007 by Arthur Hickman, a government geologist with the Geological Survey of Western Australia. The discovery was made by chance while browsing Google Earth. A 2012 government scientific drilling project in the centre of the crater confirmed in 2017 the impact of an iron-nickel meteorite. It has a depth of 30 meters, a diameter of 260 meters and its estimated age is 10-100 ka.
The Hickman meteorite belongs to the IAB complex group of iron meteorites. It has a characteristic orange patina and many specimens were only half buried.
