Description

Chinga is an iron meteorite and hence it probably comes from the core of asteroids that were destroyed by impacts with other bodies. It is an alloy of iron-nickel mainly although it contains other trace elements.

Studies from the fluvial deposits in which the meteorites was found, estimate that it fell about 10,000 to 20,000 years ago. Fragments of the meteorite were found in 1913 by gold diggers in Tuva near the Chinge River after which it is named. Years later it was officially classified as an ungrouped iron meteorite.

Structurally it is an ataxite which means “without structure”. Ataxites have >18% Nickel content and do not show Widmanstatten lines upon etching, hence their name.

The Buddhist statue “Iron Man” is believed to have been done with this meteorite due to the similar amounts of nickel in both of them.
